Working with Special Populations
Our Working with Special Populations Workshops will give Counselors, Educators, and other professionals an introduction to working with individuals and groups with special needs. Areas of discussion can include statistical data, issues, concerns and barriers faced by the group, treatment and intervention. There will also be some experiential activities.
"Mental Illness & Substance Abuse (MISA)":
This workshop addresses the special needs of individuals with mental illness, alcohol/substance abuse, or co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse problems. After completion of the workshop, participants will have gained knowledge in mental illnesses, substance abuse, diagnosis, barriers to treatment, treatment interventions, and more. This workshop will include group discussions and experiential activities.
"Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender or Questioning":
This workshop assists Counselors, Educators and other professionals understand and help Gay, Lesbian, Bi, Transgendered, and Questioning Individuals. After completion of the workshop, participants will have gained knowledge in gender identity, gender roles, sexual orientation, homophobia, heterosexual privilege, therapeutic issues, treatment and interventions, the coming out process, and more. This workshop will also include role-play activities and small group discussions.
"Formerly Incarcerated":
This workshop addresses the special needs of individuals who were formerly incarcerated. After completion of the workshop, participants will have gained knowledge in the criminal justice system, barriers to the re-entry process, substance abuse issues, mental illness, health and medical concerns, employment needs, education, case management, working with parole agents, and more. This workshop will also include group discussion and experiential activities.
