LGBTQ Affirming Counseling:

January 2009 | Jane Addams Hull House Association

This workshop will be an introduction to the issues faced by LGBTQ clients.  Workshop participants will learn about the concerns of LGBTQ clients and it's barriers to effective, supportive counseling.

This workshop is ONLY for Hull House staff.

Common Mistakes New Counselors Make:

November 17, 2009 | 2:00pm - 4:00pm | CARITAS Companies

This training will focus on the common mistakes that counselors potentially make during their early careers.  Workshop participants will learn how to avoid mistakes during the various stages of the helping process and learn where to seek assistance when needed. 

This workshop is being presented for CARITAS Companies at Grace Place in Chicago, IL.  To register or for more information, contact CARITAS Companies.

The Job Journey: Career Development Workshops are workshops developed for individuals who have never worked or are returning to the workforce after a period of time.  Workshop participants gain knowledge and skills through lectures as well as hands-on experience.  The workshops are presented in a series of three separate workshops.  Participants who complete the series will receive a certificate of completion.

   The Job Search:

The Job Search workshop gives participants the opportunity to learn and practice seeking employment through different means such as classified ads, the internet, networks, etc.  They engage in exercises that help them think about jobs that fit their individual life goals, values and needs. 

After completion of the workshop, participants will have a working plan to find a job that they will enjoy and stick with.  Participants will gain knowledge in stress management, planning a job search, job leads, employer expectations, networking, listening skills, and more.

   Your Resume, Cover Letter and Application:

The Resumes, Cover Letters and Applications workshop gives participants the opportunity to learn and create their own resume and cover letter as well as practice completing an application.  They will learn about what information is needed and what to avoid.  Additional topics include action words, references, and trouble questions.

   Interviewing Skills:

The Interviewing Skills workshop gives participants the opportunity to learn and practice how to interview with a prospective employer, with the goal of getting the job.  Participants will gain knowledge in grooming and hygiene, communication, listening skills, common interview questions, first impressions, problem questions, how to write thank you letters and more.  When possible, participants will engage in a mock interview and will receive feedback on their performance.

The Diversity Workshop takes a hands-on approach to help its participants understand and implement diversity in their life, program or organization.  After completion of the workshop, participants will have increased their knowledge of the diverse ideas and experiences of all people as well as learned to build rapport between people who are culturally, racially, and by gender different. 

This workshop will use lecture, small group discussions and role-plays to look at where our beliefs about different cultures have come from, understand the values of individual uniqueness, think through tough issues, overcome personal and institutional bias, tolerate our differences, and more.  This workshop can be tailored to the specific needs of the group.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Working with Special Populations Workshops: will give Counselors, Educators, and other professionals an introduction to working with individuals and groups with special needs.  Areas of discussion can include statistical data, issues, concerns and barriers faced by the group, treatment and intervention.  There will also be some experiential activities.

     Mental Illness & Substance Abuse (MISA):

This workshop addresses the special needs of individuals with mental illness, alcohol/substance abuse, or co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse problems.  After completion of the workshop, participants will have gained knowledge in mental illnesses, substance abuse, diagnosis, barriers to treatment, treatment interventions, and more.  This workshop will include group discussions and experiential activities.

   Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender or Questioning:

This workshop assists Counselors, Educators and other professionals understand and help Gay, Lesbian, Bi, Transgendered, and Questioning Individuals.  After completion of the workshop, participants will have gained knowledge in gender identity, gender roles, sexual orientation, homophobia, heterosexual privilege, therapeutic issues, treatment and interventions, the coming out process, and more.  This workshop will also include role-play activities and small group discussions.

   Formerly Incarcerated:

This workshop addresses the special needs of individuals who were formerly incarcerated.  After completion of the workshop, participants will have gained knowledge in the criminal justice system, barriers to the re-entry process, substance abuse issues, mental illness, health and medical concerns, employment needs, education, case management, working with parole agents, and more.  This workshop will also include group discussion and experiential activities.

The Responsible Parenting Workshop is based on Adlerian Principles focusing on a democratic relationship between the parent and child.  The workshop is a series of discussion groups and activities that are usually held once a week for 2 hours, lasting a total of 4 weeks.  This format gives parents the opportunity to practice their new skills and receive feedback from the facilitator and other parents.  The format of the workshop can also be adjusted to meet your needs.

After completion of the workshop, parents will be able to:

  • Communicate effectively with their child
  • Establish a fair and democratic relationship with their child
  • Understand their child's mis-behaviors and how to work through it
  • Develop boundaries and expectations for the child and the parent
  • and so much more
